René Rentería
I am a new resident of Westford, Vermont, having recently relocated after living in Austin, Texas, for 40 years. My photography practice is deeply rooted in a profound interest in grassroots social movements, environmentalism, the human condition, and news/public affairs, with a particular focus on the documentary genre.
As a Chicanx (Mexican American with indigenous heritage) who grew up in far South Texas along the Rio Grande River (El Rio Bravo), my move northward presents opportunities to explore the internal and external borderlands of our topographies. It also allows me to practice ways to build worlds consistent with principles of interconnection, interdependence, justice, liberation, and joy.
I am honored to share this work and assist in the inauguration of WCH’s pilot project: a community art space within this historic landmark. I am deeply cognizant that the existence of this space is the outcome of many years of community effort dedicated to cultivating a thriving Westford, and I am humbled to continue that tradition.
The images displayed here reflect my notion of ‘photography as landscape’—the seens encountered when I take my camera out for a walk down the corner and out on the streets. These strolls are moments for meditation on belonging, re-membering ourselves home, cuentos (stories), wellness, ollin (movement) and antepasados (ancestors). As I continue to establish roots—seeking healthy soil, water, and air—I look forward to connecting with more people in this area to nourish and grow. “Peace is every step”
